Activity Description

Patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and diabetic macular edema (DME) face substantial vision and quality-of-life challenges due to the chronic nature of these diseases and the need for frequent intravitreal injections, which can lead to treatment fatigue, poor adherence, and suboptimal outcomes. Real-world experience with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy has highlighted the mismatch between clinical-trial efficacy and real-world, long-term outcomes, driving interest in strategies that reduce treatment burden. Currently available implantable and surgical approaches, including the port delivery system (PDS) with ranibizumab and corticosteroid implants, offer sustained drug delivery with extended dosing intervals, helping to minimize injection frequency while maintaining efficacy. Looking ahead, emerging gene therapies and novel tyrosine kinase–inhibitor–based implants aim to further transform care by offering durable efficacy with fewer interventions. This CE Snips activity explores how to integrate recent clinical evidence into the selection and use of long-acting delivery strategies including best-practice procedural techniques that optimize outcomes in patients with nAMD, DR, and DME.

The intended audience for this activity is retina specialists and comprehensive ophthalmologists involved in the management of patients with nAMD, DR, or DME.
