Target Audience

The intended audience for the activity is psychiatrists and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Evaluate the neurotoxic effects of recurrent psychotic episodes on the brain to better comprehend the need for early intervention in schizophrenia.
  • Assess the clinical evidence pertaining to the safety and effectiveness of long-acting injectable medications in patients with first-episode and subsequent episodes of schizophrenia.
  • Evaluate clinical data pertaining to the ability of long-acting injectable medications to deter deterioration, achieve remission, and return schizophrenic patients to baseline.
  • Examine factors that are associated with poor medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia and how to effectively manage these issues to improve compliance.
  • Describe non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic strategies that improve medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia.
