Support Statement

Activity Description

In recent years, a range of advanced therapies have been developed to address the underlying mechanisms of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Despite these agents targeting a variety of inflammatory pathways, roughly one-third of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) do not respond to currently available treatments, and approximately 40% lose response over time. Patients with chronic IBD often experience long-term complications, such as intestinal fibrosis. However, no effective antifibrotic agents have yet to be identified for this patient population. In Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials, TL1A inhibition has demonstrated promise for reducing both intestinal inflammation and fibrosis. In this CE activity, experts in the field address unmet needs in IBD care, examine the role of the TL1A pathway in IBD, report the latest clinical evidence on emerging TL1A inhibitors, and discuss how TL1A may shift treatment paradigms for UC and CD.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is gastroenterologists involved in the management of patients with IBD.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Describe the limitations and unmet needs associated with current treatment options for the management of patients with IBD.
  • Examine the role of the TL1A pathway in the pathogenesis of IBD and its potential as a therapeutic target.
  • Outline the latest clinical evidence of emerging TL1A-targeted therapies from both an anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic perspective.
  • Review how emerging TL1A inhibitors may impact existing treatment paradigms.
