Robert F. Kushner, MD, MS, FACP, FTOS, is Professor of Medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; Clinical Director of the Northwestern Comprehensive Center on Obesity; and Director for the Center for Lifestyle Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. After finishing a residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University, he went completed a postgraduate fellowship in clinical nutrition and earned a master’s degree in clinical nutrition and nutritional biology from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Kushner is an internationally recognized expert on the care of patients with overweight and obesity.

Dr. Kushner is past president of The Obesity Society, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists, as well as past chair of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He is also a board member of the Obesity Action Coalition.

Dr. Kushner has authored more than 200 original articles, reviews, books, and book chapters covering medical nutrition, medical nutrition education, and obesity. He is author/editor of multiple books, including Dr. Kushner’s Personality Type Diet, Fitness Unleashed, and Counseling Overweight Adults: The Lifestyle Patterns Approach and Toolkit. In addition, he is editor of the American Medical Association’s Assessment and Management of Adult Obesity: A Primer for Physicians. His current books include Practical Manual of Clinical Obesity; Treatment of the Obese Patient, 2nd Edition; Nutrition and Bariatric Surgery; and Lifestyle Medicine: A Manual for Clinical Practice.

Scott Kahan, MD, MPH, FTOS, is Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness; Medical Director of the Strategies To Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance at George Washington University, Washington, DC; Chair of the Clinical Committee for The Obesity Society; and serves on the Faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland, and the George Washington University Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Kahan received his undergraduate degree in bioengineering from Columbia University, New York; his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; and his residency training and master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Kahan has advised the White House, Congress, the US Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, several Surgeons General, and numerous national and local advocacy groups and public health initiatives pertaining to obesity, nutrition, and chronic disease prevention. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, the Obesity Treatment Foundation, and Playworks DC.

Dr. Kahan has published more than 100 scientific articles, textbooks, and textbook chapters in the areas of medicine, obesity, and public health. He serves as a scientific peer reviewer for more than 30 academic journals and research organizations. He has received numerous awards, including Healthcare Provider Advocate of the Year by the Obesity Action Coalition and the Patients’ Choice award.

Donna H. Ryan, MD, FACP, FTOS, is Professor Emerita and Interim Executive Director at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA. Her research has focused on obesity and diabetes, and she was an investigator on the teams that developed and executed the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), POUNDS Lost, DPP (Diabetes Prevention Program) and Look AHEAD studies. Her continuing interests focus on the translation of effective weight management into primary care practices, especially in diabetes prevention and reversal.

Dr. Ryan’s scholarly activities include authorship of more than 200 original publications and 45 books, chapters and reviews, primarily in the field of obesity. She is Associate Editor-in-Chief of Obesity. She served as co-Chair of the Expert Panel that produced the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on Practice Guidelines/The Obesity Society 2013 guidelines for the diagnosis and management of obesity. She was a panel member of the 2015 Endocrine Society’s systematic evidence review and the guidelines for medications that affect body weight. She is President-Elect of the World Obesity Federation.

Christopher D. Still, DO, FACP, FTOS, is Medical Director, Center for Nutrition and Weight Management; Director, Geisinger Obesity Institute; and Medical Director, Employee Wellness, Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pennsylvania. Dr. Still received a Master of Science degree from Columbia University Institute of Human Nutrition in New York City and his osteopathic medical degree from The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Pennsylvania. He completed his internship at the University of Buffalo at Sisters of Charity Hospital, New York, followed by a residency in internal medicine and a subsequent fellowship in clinical nutrition and obesity treatment at Geisinger Medical Center.

Dr. Still has been studying developments in nutrition, metabolic syndrome, and obesity for nearly 3 decades. His work has included research into genetic markers for obesity; nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and diabetes; the metabolic differences among obese, formerly obese, and normal-weight men; surgical options for severely obese persons; and leptin-level determination among elderly obese women. He is principal investigator on a rural elderly nutrition and aging study of approximately 22,000 individuals.

Dr. Still is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Obesity Medicine, American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists, and American College of Nutrition. He is a member of several professional societies, including The Obesity Society, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Nutrition. He served on the board of directors for the Obesity Action Coalition and is the past president of the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists. He and his program have been featured on CNN, National Public Radio, ABC News, and The Discovery Health Channel. He was awarded the ASMBS Integrated Health Circle of Excellence Award.

Dr. Still has edited the book Nutrition and Bariatric Surgery, as well as the ASMBS Textbook of Bariatric Surgery, Volume 1. He has published articles in several journals, including Obesity, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Lancet Endocrinology, Annals of Surgery, Gastroenterology, Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, Surgery for Obesity and Related Disorders, and Human Molecular Genetics. He has lectured on topics such as vitamin and mineral metabolism; diet, nutrition, and exercise; obesity through the life cycle; and perioperative medical and nutritional management of the bariatric surgery patient.
